Canadian Medical Auctions Supports Athletes with Remote Track and Field Social Meet-Ups

CMA EVP & COO Helen Wilks has been involved with Special Olympics since 2008 as Team Manager and Coach in various different local sports teams including Swimming and Track and Field.

Special Olympics has grown from a modest program serving local athletes to become the world's largest movement dedicated to promoting respect, acceptance, inclusion, and human dignity for people with intellectual disabilities through sport.  Through actively engaging in the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle, Special Olympics aims to improve the well-being of individuals with an intellectual disability.  Strong, connected communities are created, and for many Special Olympics athletes, attending regular practice is the highlight of the week and often one of the few opportunities to socialize.

The pandemic has been especially challenging for those with intellectual disabilities to stay connected. Helen notes: "As Team Manager for Track and Field in Special Olympics Burlington, Head Coach Cayley Firth and I we were very aware that being involved in Special Olympics is a key factor in staying mentally and physically well for our many youth and adult athletes - and there have been no meet-ups for Special Olympics since the pandemic shut down the Province in March last year."  Helen and Cayley decided that even though practice in person was impossible, virtual meet-ups would provide much-needed social time and fun for athletes to stay connected.  Canadian Medical Auctions has proudly sponsored these regular zoom meet-ups.

"Special Olympics' aim is to continue to improve and expand the quality, opportunity and accessibility of sport to individuals with an intellectual disability - and it's a privilege to uphold that mission. We are hoping to be back in person in September, but in the meantime, we continue to build upon the past success of the organization and provide connection opportunities now along with hope for the future!"
